Search any fence-related term with local intent and Google shows three businesses next to a map before almost anything else. Homeowners trust that box more than ads and more than organic listings. Here is how Google decides who gets those three spots, and how a fence company moves in.
How Google picks the three
Google has named its local ranking factors plainly: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how established and reviewed you look). You cannot move your shop. You can absolutely move relevance and prominence.
Relevance: get the profile right
- Primary category: Fence contractor. The single most common mistake we find is a generic "Contractor" category. The primary category is the strongest relevance signal you control.
- Every service listed. Wood fences, vinyl, chain link, gates, repairs. Each service you list is a search you can match.
- A real description with real keywords. Written for buyers, mentioning your services and towns naturally.
- Your website agreeing with your profile. The services and cities on your site should mirror the profile. Google cross-checks.
Prominence: reviews are the engine
Count, rating, recency, and responses. A profile adding real five-star reviews every week reads as a business people choose, and Google promotes it. This is the entire reason our review engine exists: automated invites after every job, one tap for the customer, and every review answered. Aim for 4.6 or better and a steady weekly drip rather than bursts.
Activity: signals you are alive
- Photos of real jobs added consistently, not a batch from three years ago.
- Posts every week or two. Almost no fence company does this, which is why it works.
- Questions answered, hours accurate, holiday hours set.
What does not work
Keyword-stuffing your business name violates Google's rules and gets profiles suspended. Fake reviews get caught by pattern detection and can erase your real ones. Virtual offices to fake proximity get profiles removed. The boring, legitimate work wins this game.
How long it takes
Profile fixes can move rankings within weeks. The review engine compounds over months. In competitive metros, expect a real run at the top three to take one to two seasons of consistent signals, faster in smaller towns. Pair the map work with organic SEO and the two reinforce each other: the map pack and page one are decided by overlapping signals.
The map pack is not won by whoever is best at fencing. It is won by whoever sends Google the clearest signals. Send clearer signals.
